raw video of a brazil church service from Sunday Morning
Programme website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b047d010 The Sao Francisco Church in Salvador is one of Brazil's oldest colonial churches, which is done out in baroque style where all the surfaces are covered with golden woodwork and paintings.
05 November 2012 Tens of thousands of people have attended the opening of what is being considered the biggest Catholic church in Brazil, The Mother of God Sanctuary, in Sao Paulo. Brazil is the most populated Catholic country in the world, but the Church has been struggling to maintain its influence, while neo-Pentecostalism continues to grow.
Brazil's biggest Catholic church was inaugurated in Sao Paulo on Friday - the 'Mae de Deus' (Mother of God) sanctuary. The enormous, still unfinished structure was designed by the Japanese-Brazilian architect Ruy Ohtake who worked on the project for free. It covers 30 thousand square metres- enough space for 100 thousand worshippers. It's the brainchild of Father Marcelo Rossi - who paid for it with the profits of his media success - a household name in Brazil, he has sold 9 million books and 12 million CDs of prayers. It looks like an airport hangar and it sounds like a rock concert. Thousands have packed into a megachurch on the periphery of Sao Paulo for one of Father Marcelo Rossi's Thursday night masses. The Roman Catholic priest belts out some of his hit songs before walking up to the altar. The parishioners join in, waving their arms in the air. "Lord, I know you love me," sings a young woman in braces. Father Marcelo, 46, was a personal trainer before he joined the clergy. Now he is at the forefront of a Brazilian movement known as the Charismatic Catholic Renovation trying to invigorate the Church and lure new and old followers back to the fold. They use music and sermons aimed at trying to secure success on Earth as well as in the after-life, methods more often associated with Latin Americ...
BRAZIL — A church wedding in Brazil was thrown into complete chaos after a gate-crasher opened fire on guests during the ceremony. 7 Segundos reports that the horrifying incident happened on Monday afternoon, as a wedding took place inside a church in the Alagoas municipality of Limoeiro de Anadia. A video recording the ceremony shows the bride and groom marching down the aisle, unaware that a casually-dressed man was following behind. The man, identified as Umberto Ferreira dos Santos, made his way to a pew, and reportedly called out to groomsman Edmilson Bezerra da Silva, 37. Reaching for a gun, he then blasted da Silva and his father, 62-year-old Cicero Barbosa da Silva, before walking away. The two men were injured but are now recovering. A woman, believed to be the groomsman’s wife...

George C. Stoney, noted American documentary filmmaker and educator talks with his friend Paulo Freire, educator, author, and philosopher from Brazil. Filmed at a Catholic church in Olinda, Brazil in 1996, Stoney and Freire discuss Liberation Theology, tolerance, large questions of life, and Freire's notion of Christ as a friend. This conversation is a excerpt from a longer work-in-progress: "Finding Freire", a George C. Stoney film about the famous Brazilian educator. "Finding Freire" is produced by George C. Stoney, David Bagnall, David Olive, and Julio Wainer. This excerpt was filmed by Julio Wainer, with Satie Wada and Mayumi Wainer assisting. Original footage was filmed in Sony Hi-8 format, in January, 1996. Dave Olive restored and edited this clip. __________________________...
Short video showing our handy work helping to build a church structure in Brazil. Our mission was to set up the foundation pillars for the assembly hall. That included digging 16 support holes by shovel and placing long heavy tree trunks in those holes by hand. No construction equipment here. This was done old school style. — in Cametá, Para. An evangelical priest was attacked by a knifeman during a church service in Brazil that was being streamed on Facebook Live. The 26-year-old suspect as the reading was broadcast on social media because he did not like the sermon, according to reports. He was filmed walking calmly up stairs to the right of the pulpit before pulling out the weapon he was carrying inside the top of his trousers. Church-goers could be overheard screaming warnings to the clergyman, who held up his microphone to defend himself. A brave worshipper rushed up behind the attacker and got him in a bear hug as he slashed at his victim with the knife.
From the favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro to television screens across the nation, the Pentecostal church is growing in numbers and influence in Brazil, and more than doubled between 1980 and 2000. The Pentecostal growth in Brazil comes as the worlds largest Catholic community shrinks, according to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. Pentecostals often view their churchgoing experience as more personal and social activism — particularly outreach to the poor — as more common. Producer Bryan Myers and correspondent Edie Magnus report from the Assembly of God New Zion church in Rio de Janeiro. As Brazil, the world's largest Catholic country, prepares for Pope Francis's visit for the World Youth Day, same-sex couples continue to gain legal rights. But the Catholic Church still condemns homosexuality. Evangelical churches, although still very much conservative for some, have proven more flexible, allowing followers to decide for themselves. Many gays and lesbians have turned to them, like more than 20% of the Brazilian population. Duration: 02:19
